On Tuesday, plenary at the Nigerian Senate was adjourned for a week because the Red Chamber could not form a quorum.
The Nigerian Senate needs to have thirty-eight (38) of the one hundred and nine (109) senators to carry out any legislative activity but only twenty (20) members were in attendance when today’s session began. This means that eighty-nine (89) senators were not present in today’s plenary session.
Senator Phillip Aduda, the Minority Whip, who moved the motion for the plenary adjournment, cited order 10 (3) of the Senate rules and explained that majority of the Senators were absent because of their oversight functions.
The Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, seconded the motion for the adjournment, stressing that the order cited by Aduda, barred the Senate from carrying out any Legislative duties, if members are not up to 38.
Saraki then said, “This is in line with order 10.3; if we do not have quorum, we need to adjourn. That being said, all senators currently on oversight function should try to complete all duties before the end of the week.”
He then put the motion to a vote, and members overwhelmingly backed it.
Senate Leader, Ahmad Lawan, thereafter moved for the adjournment till Tuesday, November 20.
